Getting a heat pump to work efficiently can sometimes require a homeowner to acquire an engineer’s level of expertise – the sort of project that tech-obsessed men are naturally drawn to. “There’s something satisfying about the feeling of self-sufficiency. The idea of independence, and not having to rely on energy companies or governments, is a powerful draw for many men,” says John Small, of eco consultancy Ty Eco."
