Decahedral Glamping Chalets in Bodelwyddan

Small snippet of introduction content for the case studies collection page.

At Ty Eco MMC, we thrive on delivering unique and sustainable timber structures. Recently, we completed the installation of three ten-sided (decahedral) Glamping Chalets in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire. The project was set against the stunning backdrop of Bodelwyddan Castle and The Marble Church; targeting a minimum performance of Building Regs compliance and a design brief that was modern but still in keeping with it’s natural environment and village aesthetic.

The client required highly insulated, energy-efficient chalets with a striking modern design. Due to the new Part L regulations, despite being holiday chalets, they still had to mee the current housing standards to energy efficiency.

Given the complexity of the ten-sided structure, the client opted for roof trusses from our sister company, Minera Roof Trusses, to ensure structural integrity. They also specified natural materials for the exterior, creating a strong connection to the surrounding environment.

Step 1: Design and Material Selection

For this project, we utilized 140mm timber studs filled with Knauf Supafil Max blown glass wool for superior insulation. The walls were manufactured off-site to speed up construction and ensure quality control. Key materials chosen for this project included:

Wall Construction:

  • Medite Smartply Propassiv (Interior): Installed for airtightness, ensuring minimal energy loss.

  • Kronospan 18mm OSB3 (Exterior): Provided the strength and flexibility to accommodate the client’s choice of natural sawn larch cladding.

  • Echofoil EXO Reflective Breather Membrane: Pre-fitted in the factory for weather tightness and to enhance the U-value. This was a specific choice by the client to maximize thermal efficiency.

Roof Construction:

  • Roof Trusses: Due to the decahedral shape of the chalets, roof trusses were designed and supplied by Minera Roof Trusses, specialists in complex roof structures.

Step 2: On-Site Installation

The on-site assembly was quick and efficient, with the wall panels installed in under two days using a crane. The roof trusses were then placed, completing the structure of each chalet.

Construction Components:

  • Wall Panels: Pre-insulated and wrapped in Echofoil EXO membrane, the wall panels were craned into place efficiently, reducing on-site time.

  • Roof Trusses: Installed immediately after the walls, providing a solid and secure roof structure that could accommodate the ten-sided design.

Step 3: Custom Porches and Final Preparations

Once the main structures were up, our installation team added a custom-designed porch to each chalet. Built from natural larch, these porches complemented the overall aesthetic and tied the design to the natural environment. After completing the structural and exterior framework, the chalets were handed over to the client for cladding and interior finishes.

Custom Elements:

  • Natural Larch Porches: Each chalet was fitted with a porch that not only added functionality but also enhanced the visual appeal of the buildings.

Step 4: Exterior Finishing and Future Vision

The client opted for natural sawn larch cladding in a modern hit-and-miss pattern, which will be applied as part of the final finishing phase. Though the chalets are still in the final stages of completion, the weather-tight structure and carefully chosen materials ensure they will blend seamlessly into their beautiful surroundings.

Cladding Options:

  • Natural Larch Hit & Miss Pattern: A modern cladding style that offers both aesthetic appeal and durability, perfectly suited to the woodland setting.

The Red Roofs Extension in The Moss Valley is a prime example of Ty Eco MMC’s ability to deliver high-performance, energy-efficient extensions in record time. Using our Adra P0 Passive Panels, we installed the wall panels and roof trusses in just a day, ensuring the build was weather-tight and ready for trades immediately. The extension will provide a warm, comfortable space for the client’s elderly parents, demonstrating the speed, flexibility, and thermal efficiency of our timber frame systems.

The Client was thrilled with the end result and how quickly we turned the job around.
